AKINLANA LOWMAN

Akinlana is a mixed-media visual artist, percussionist, and Capoeira practitioner who has been studying his craft for three decades. Growing up in Pittsburgh, Akin studied African diasporic art, music, and culture in both formal and informal settings from a number of Pittsburgh-based educators and community leaders. Akin also studied Capoeira and other Afro-Brazilian cultural art forms with local teachers and masters from Brazil.

Akinlana received his B.F.A. in Animation from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2008. Akinlana maintains a visual art practice from his studio in Pittsburgh. He has worked as a commercial illustrator for authors such as Gwethlyn Jones.

In 2018, Akinlana founded the Capoeira Association of Pittsburgh. Through this group, Akin teaches Capoeira in schools, community centers, and afterschool programs throughout the Pittsburgh region.
